Desi Stars Strut The Cannes 2015 Red Carpet

Cannes Film Festival is the single most prestigious film festival that celebrities, film-makers, crew and the complete film fraternity worldwide flock to, every year. It is known as much for the special screenings and black-tie events as it is for the now well-known, red carpet walk.

The red carpet witnesses men and women of the film world in their designer and dapper best striking a pose for the shutterbugs, the gossips and much to their consternation – the critics as well.

2015 saw some extremely notable appearances, but none that were as marked, as Asian born or bred celebs walking the red carpet.

From now-veteran Aishwariya Rai to uber comfy newbie Mindy Kaling, from still-experimenting Sonam to bad-choices Katrina (more on this later in this post) , the world could all but ignore the brown girls taking over the event, and how!

Here’s a break-down of looks we loved, hated and couldn’t decide on !

1. Aishwariya Rai

Fifteen years at Cannes and Aishwariya finally got her look completely right this time. Thank God for that because she’s had her fair share of fails walking the red carpet in the last few years. Ash favored Oscar De La Renta, Ralph & Russo and her trusted Ellie Saab pieces this year.

Taking a leaf out of last year’s wide appreciation of her let-loose soft waves, she wore her hair similarly this year with a focus on gemstone colored gowns and bold lips to make a statement.

My favorite has to be the look she wore to the Cinema Against AIDS event at the amFAR gala. Loved the lavender Ellie Saab gown and Harry Winston necklace, paired with soft, feminine makeup. She looked like a fairytale princess and carried this look off purrrrfectly !

2. Sonam Kapoor

Sonam slayed it at the Sea of Trees premiere in that blue Ralph and Russo – but here’s the thing, bright dress, bright lipstick, heavy contouring, bright hair, bright nails and bright blue shoes – so stark ! There was just too much happening, but this look was a tad bit better than her next appearance in a feathery Ellie Saab that was just not made for her.

Twitterati’s favorite butt of jokes for the day was of course, Sonam. That feather dress was kinda asking for it though.

3. Katrina Kaif

When you’re walking the red carpet, every detail is surveyed with a keen eye – especially when you’re making a debut ! But where Katrina was hoping to make a splash, it turns out she found herself in a puddle.

Her first appearance was in a quite pretty black lace by Oscar De La Renta with shocking red hair (for her film Fitoor) – a look that people wanted to forget ASAP.

Her second appearance though, in a basic Ellie Saab creation had people wishing they’d remembered that first one instead because, quite simply – this was one of the worst looks at the festival. Period.

Red hair, red lips, red dress, boring hairdo -any more red and the fashion bulls would’ve come charging !

4. Richa Chadha

Surprisingly , this Gangs of Wasseypur girl fared better at the red carpet than most of Bollywood . She chose a Sabyasachi sari in mint and pink and carried off one of the sexiest looks Cannes saw this year.

She wore a printed number for the photo call of Masaan with pretty pumps. Her Gauri and Nainika outfit for the premiere of Youth was definitely one of the best desi-designed outfits on show this year.

Maybe more of our desi divas could wear local designers instead of wearing outfits that aren’t very becoming on them ? What do you guys think ?

5. Mindy Kaling

Sometimes, you just don’t need to wear an overly decadent gown just cause you’re walking the red carpet. You can carry off fun prints and color blocks with as much ease, simply because ! Much like the loved characters Mindy plays on screen, her looks on the red carpet were fun, colorful and quite simply – not trying too hard !

Loved that Salvador Perez color block gown on her !

Pssst.. Did you know this gown was not actually a gown but two separate pieces ??
