The Health Effects of Cinnamon

Cinnamon is best known as a spice, sprinkled on toast and lattes. But extracts from the bark of the cinnamon tree have also been used traditionally as medicine throughout the world. It is available in either its whole quill form, as cinnamon sticks, or in powder form, grounded.

The Benefits of Cinnamon

Cinnamon has also extremely high anti-oxidant activity, and the oil of cinnamon has strong anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Cinnamon is also a great source of manganese, fiber, iron, andcalcium. As a result, it has been used as an effective home remedy for:

  • Reducing blood sugar levels and treating Type 2 Diabetes
  • Lowering cholesterol
  • Aiding digestion
  • Treating diarrhea
  • Curing the common cold
  • Reducing arthritis pain
  • Boosting memory and cognitive function
  • Treating toothaches
  • Eliminating bad breath
  • Curing headaches and migraine pain

Too much of anything, however is not good and too much cinnamon can be toxic, creating problems in the liver. It also has a thinning effect on blood; so people taking medication related to the thinning of blood should be careful of that as well. Therefore it must be taken in moderate levels.

Cinnamon Tea

A great way to reap the benefits of cinnamon is by sipping some delicious cinnamon tea!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 cup boiling water

Procedure:

  1. Break the cinnamon stick into pieces and keep them in a cup.
  2. Pour boiling water into the cup.
  3. Cover the cup and steep for around ten minutes.

tip: If you prefer a stronger combination, add more cinnamon and vice versa, for less.
