5 Easy Ways to Eat Healthy on a Holiday

Off on a vacation? Depending on the place you’re going to, it could either mean healthier, or (as usually it seems to), very unhealthy. It’s okay to lose track. You’re on a break, on a holiday. But although it’s perfectly fine to give your eating habits a break, too, it’s best to keep a few tips in mind so you don’t come home with an unwanted long-term friend from a temporary stay.

1. No to sugary drinks. There’s no two ways about it. Drink water when you’re thirsty and indulge in the delicious drink once in a while. If you like fizzy drinks, opt for carbonated water instead but don’t cave in!

2. Plan ahead. Pack a few healthy alternatives like nuts and dried foods. Check online for nearby restaurants and plan your time accordingly.

3. Ask questions. Don’t worry about sounding picky or specific, it’s important to take care of your body and to know what you’re putting into it. If you’re eating somewhere, ask them about how your dish was cooked if it’s not clear, or if they can put something healthy together for you even if it’s not on the menu.

4. Switch fried with veggies. Try to stay away from foods that are soaked in oil. Look for items grilled, baked (not marinated), steamed. Switch white breads with brown, and try to fill up with more veggies than others.

5. Lastly, the portions. That’s the biggest tip of all, in my opinion. For instance you let yourself have the occasional treat, size is what matters there. You could eat healthy all day, but a little too much of sugary sweets could be the deciding factor of whether you had too much on your plate or not enough!
