Probably the most commonly used oil amongst South Asians, coconut oil has been in use for many generations. There is no doubt that it is a favorite and for good reason! Coconut oil is rich in vitamin E, vitamin K and iron andhelps in restoring your hair’s natural softness and shine.
Olive oil is a hero in culinary circles due to its taste, versatility and nutritional properties. However, this oil does wonders for your hair as well. A massage with olive oil results in a healthy scalp and softer, smoother hair. It is also a great conditioning element if used sparsely. Leave the oil in your hair from anywhere between 15-60 minutes, depending on your hair texture, for the best results.
Pomegranate Seed Oil
Not many people know this, but pomegranate seed oil can do miracles for fine or thinning hair. It’s benefits can definitely not be ignored as it contains high amounts of punicic acid, which helps in revitalizing hair texture and leaves it looking thick and glossy. It also protects against chemicals and other damage resulting from a polluted environment. Pomegranate seed oil is thick in consistency and a bit pricey, so a recommended way of using it is to mix it with olive oil so that it is easier to apply and will last you longer too.
Another type of oil which has a thick texture, the stickiness and consistency of castor oil sometimes can act as deterrents to it being used widely. Castor oil encourages hair re-growth, especially if it’s mixed with a chopped clove of garlic. As it is high in omega-6 fatty acids, it helps in the nourishment of hair, hair follicles and the scalp. You can mix it with coconut or almond oil to make it easier to apply and wash off.
Almond oil is made from the kernel of almond seeds. There are usually two types of almond oil, of which the sweet almond oil is used for skin and hair. It is rich in vitamin E, D, iron, magnesium and calcium. Almond oil locks in moisture and is therefore, great for dry hair. It helps nourish the hair, smoothes hair cuticles by controlling shedding and promotes hair growth and thickness.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is used in various shampoos, conditioners and masks and is widely recognized for its versatility. It helps in unclogging hair follicles and nourishing roots. Take a few drops of tea tree oil and mix it with almond or coconut oil and simply massage it onto your scalp. As it is quite potent, it should be used in small amounts. It also helps fight dandruff, treating dry scalp, various infections and helps prevent hair fall.
