Your New Years Fitness Resolution Strategy!

New Year fitness resolution

News years is a great time for people to close up the previous chapter and focus on new beginnings. But did you know most people fall off their goals within 3 weeks to 3 months?! In order to stay on track, it must be a priority, and many people don’t know how to stick to their plans. Here is your strategy for staying on track all year round! Grab a pen and paper, and dedicate about 10 – 20 minutes to this.

1 – Your Why!

why

Why do you need to change or see this “goal” though. Is your health at risk? Are you uncomfortable with the extra weight? Do you lack energy? You need to understand in your core, why your goal is important to you. If its not really that important and just a “wish list” item, then you are likely to loose focus. Reflect on this one a lot.

2 – Your Commitment

What are you willing to give up to achieve your goal? Are you willing to sacrifice sleep? Time with friends? If you aren’t willing to give up old habits, then you are setting yourself up for failure. Often people make resolutions because it would be a “nice to have” on their wish list, and they don’t actually prioritize the time and energy required to see it through. This is how people fail. PLAN to COMMIT. And PLAN to give up other things in life to make it happen

3 – SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely

This is how you should organize your goal list. If your goal is to lose weight, write down the Specific amount of weight (eg: 10 lbs by Summer), make it measurable (eg: 1 lb a week and working out 5 days a week and eating 90% healthy), achievable (eg: back to your commitment and how you can make it happen), realistic (losing more than 2 lbs a week might be too much for you, so make sure you don’t over state your goals and plan to fail) and timely (eg: give yourself a deadline such as a wedding, an event, a vacation etc).

4 – Trust the Process

Everything in life takes time. If you are going to school, it will take time, patience and hard work to finish your degree. The same goes for everything else in the world. If you want to succeed, you need patience and perseverance and know that all the small changes will conclude in BIG RESULTS. You just need to keep going and not give up.

5 – Have fun!

Don’t treat your fitness plans like it’s a torture period. Enjoy yourself learning about everything you can about your body, your health and a healthy lifestyle and focus on why it makes you a better person. Many people think that diet and fitness is about torturing themselves with tasteless food, and this is beyond reality. Healthy food is actually richer in flavor and once you embrace a variety of foods, you will not enjoy other “junk foods” again.

6 – Reward yourself

You’ve worked hard and you feel guilty about having that cheat meal or taking a “break” from the health lifestyle. It doesn’t take ONE meal to break your momentum, so move on when you slid away from the new routine. You can also find other ways of treating yourself, such as a spa day or a night out with friends where you just laugh and enjoy yourself. You need to always balance yourself.

7 – Create an affirmation list

Affirmations are a great way to focus on the things you already have and be grateful in the present. This is a very powerful technique that many successful people employ, because it helps maintain mental balance and focus on reality without loosing focus on your goals. Create an affirmation list of things you are grateful for in the PRESENT and another list of your goals, but write them down as if you already achieved them. Visualizing the goals daily will help you maintain focus and keep your eye on the prize.

Remember, fitness is a long term plan, not a short term plan.
